We will do a lot of work this year with understanding positive learner attributes. These attributes will help all students to be and feel more successful. Our goal in 6th grade is to help students manage their own behavior while maximizing their learning. We work closely with students to problem solve issues in a variety of ways. In the event a student makes a poor choice we will work with them on how to fix it and prevent repetition. If necessary parents will be brought into the problem solving process if it is a larger issue or if negative habits are developing.
Relationship with teachers and peers is an important part of students feeling connected and empowered in the classroom. Please encourage your child to discuss school issues directly with their teachers. It is tempting as parents to problem solve class issues for our children because we love them so much and are glad they confided in us. But by taking over we are telling students they are not capable of solving their own issues. Give them a chance!
If you want to email or call teachers privately to give us a heads up on the issue that is fine, but in addition encourage and empower your child by having them talk to their teachers directly. Strong confident learners know how to advocate for their needs, sixth grade is a safe place to learn these skills. If your child has tried to solve the problem directly, but was unsuccessful then coach them on how to be successful. If, for some reason, the issue still remains unresolved then step in and help directly with the problem solving process.
